More to come says triumphant Frosty

Frosty gets Pole position and finished 2nd in race 1

Mark Winterbottom's V8 Supercar Championship hunt is back on track after a pole position and podium finish in the Hamilton 400 today.

The Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon driver upheld his reputation as the king of one-lap qualifying, not putting a tyre wrong in the top-ten shoot-out to finish 0.007s ahead of Jamie Whincup.

Frosty launched off the line but Whincup's 888 FG Falcon worked its tyres better in the opening laps, giving him the jump at turn six. Winterbottom says there is more pace to be found before tomorrow's race and he is optimistic of an even better result.

"It's nice to get pole," said Frosty. "It would have been nicer to get a win but our tyre temp took a long time to come up and there's no use fighting someone whose tyres are working well.

"We needed to get that pole to give the guys a morale boost and prove we've got a quick car. That proved that 888 are not unbeatable in qualifying. It means we've made a step forward but there's still work to do in the race because Jamie is doing it easy in the race at the moment."

Team-mate Steve Richards admitted he was not on the pace in qualifying and needs to work the Castrol FPR Falcon better in tomorrow's 20-minute qualifying.

Starting from 21st, Richo struggled with brake temperature and ran wide in the early laps, hitting the wall at turn four. He pitted to check for damage and had to fight from the back to finish 16th.

"The strength of the car is its brakes but when you're driving in the pack they heat up and I was never in a position to be able to pass," said Richo. "I just ran wide on the exit and they would get me back.

"I was just driving the car as hard as it could effectively go. Once I was clear of the car I would catch the next one very quickly. It's just the whole thing that you're never close enough to make an attack.

"In terms of qualifying, tomorrow it's just a case of getting more out of the car, not getting held up and using the tyres more effectively; basically everything I did today in qualifying, don't do tomorrow."

Qualifying for Race Two begins tomorrow at 1pm.
