Frosty 3rd in Abu Dhabi Practice

19 February 2010

Frosty happy with the direction they are heading in

Mark Winterbottom and Steve Richards have made a strong start to the opening event of the 2010 V8 Supercar Championship Series, the Yas V8 400, at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi overnight.

Winterbottom, debuting a new #5 Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon built by the team at Ford Performance Racing, finished the day with the third fastest time while Richards was the seventh quickest driver during the practice session.

Winterbottom spent much of the two practice sessions learning the characteristics of his new car and was pleased with the progress made throughout the day.

Richards’ seventh fastest time aboard the Orrcon Steel-backed #6 Dunlop Super Dealer FPR Falcon bodes well for a strong start to his 2010 campaign on a circuit that he is thoroughly enjoying competing at.

Shane van Gisbergen set the fastest time of the day ahead of Craig Lowndes and Winterbottom.

Qualifying will be held this evening ahead of the opening 43-lap race at 1:05am AEDST tomorrow.

QUOTES FROM THE DRIVERS

Mark Winterbottom – #5 Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon

“To finish with the third fastest time of the day was a good start to the weekend, especially when you consider it is a new track and we’re in a new car,” said Winterbottom.

“The new Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon is a little bit different to drive to my previous one, both driving wise and set up wise, so we need to get our head around that to really understand what we need to change in the set up.

“It was really a productive session, I had some oversteer early on but we made some changes and certainly headed in the right direction. We’ll work on it tonight and get it even better for tomorrow.

“The track itself is pretty hard, there are a lot of corners where there is a major difference in speed if you can get the right line compared to slightly missing your marks. There are some good high speed braking spots and a nice variety of corners, it’s all pretty cool and racing under lights is going to be a lot of fun.”

“Overall it was a pretty good day and everything went well,” said Richards.

“We had some scheduled changes that we wanted to work through and we made some positive progress.

“The biggest issue is finding our way around the place and having enough laps to do it, but we seemed to get there in the end.

“I really like the circuit, it has got some big braking points, some fast corners that are pretty challenging and a triple right hander where you have got to brake into a tight right hander - that’s a bit of fun.

“Overall, the facility is just phenomenal.”
