Winterbottom claims another podium in Bahrain
Frosty finishes second
After being joined in the top ten shootout by his Orrcon Steel-backed team-mate Steve Richards, who qualified seventh fastest, Winterbottom started the 37-lap race from third position.
Both drivers made a solid start to the race, Winterbottom steering the #5 Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon into second place while Richards placed himself in a position to challenge for a spot inside the top five.
Unfortunately for Richards his good run aboard the Orrcon Steel-backed #6 Dunlop Super Dealer FPR Falcon was short-lived with brake issues forcing him to the pit area on lap four. He would later return to the circuit in an effort to establish a solution to the issues.
As the race continued, Winterbottom held strong in second place to secure his spot on the podium in between race winner Jamie Whincup and third placed Craig Lowndes.
Today’s action will consist of a 20-minute qualifying session at 8:20pm (AEDST) and the final race of the weekend at 11:35pm (AEDST).
QUOTES FROM THE DRIVERS
Mark Winterbottom – #5 Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon
“We’re getting podiums, so you can’t be unhappy – we’ve just got to work harder to get a shiny first place trophy. If you can’t win you’ll always fight for whatever’s left
“Second place isn’t a failure, we’ll keep getting points and our day will come. If we can’t win I need to make sure that I finish the race and get the points.”
Steve Richards – Orrcon Steel-backed #6 Dunlop Super Dealer FPR Falcon
“The car is much better than what it was last week and it was a good boost for everyone to be able to get into the shootout,” said Richards.
“When you’ve got grip, you can drive the car the way you want it and put some good laps in.
“Unfortunately my day ended early with a brake issue. It started on lap two and by the end of the third lap I had no front brakes.
“The issue is totally different to what we had in Abu Dhabi. We changed the front callipers and master cylinder before going back out but then the issue came back again. We then made another couple of changes and it appeared to fix the problem but I only got about four laps in.
“We’ll have a good look over everything tonight to get it sorted and aim for a good result tomorrow.”
